Outreach Programs

Environmental Issues in the Great Lakes Basin

The Marine Museum is pleased to offer outreach education programs to local schools and community groups. These programs have direct ties to the Ontario curriculum, and are primarily targeted for Grades 4-8, though we will happily adjust our programming to suit your group's needs.

We are currently offering two programs:

1. Invasive Species

What are invasive species? Why do we care? What effects do invasive species have on ecosystems? Students will learn about commonly found invasive species in the Great Lakes Basin, their characteristics, and their effects on other species and the environment. The basic needs of organisms and their positions in a food web will also be explored.

2. Water Quality and Quantity

How much water is there on Earth? How much of that can be used for drinking? What are pollutants and what happens when they enter aquatic ecosystems? Students will explore the quantity of water on Earth, the different forms it can take, and where it is found. Water pollution will be discussed, including how it can be measured and what effects it has on living things.
